Our Story & Background

Bridging Africa and the Diaspora Through Business, Culture, and Community

The Chicago Diaspora Chamber was inspired by the vision and lifelong commitment of its founder, Nathaniel Sena Amenyo, widely known as Sena, to building meaningful connections between Africa and the global African Diaspora. Drawing on years of experience in media, community organizing, cultural diplomacy, civic engagement, and international collaboration, Sena established a platform to strengthen relationships, create opportunities, and promote economic cooperation between African and Diaspora communities.

Born and raised in Accra, Ghana, Sena migrated to the United States in 2008 after earning his bachelor's degree from Central University College in 2006. Before transitioning into his career in data management and data modeling, he worked with the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) in Ghana. He also co-founded Save The Dance, an annual inter-high-school dance competition that promoted HIV/AIDS awareness among young people for more than seven years.

In 2012, Sena earned an MBA in Healthcare Administration from Argosy University in Chicago. His professional journey has evolved across media, entrepreneurship, community development, project management, and cross-cultural engagement.

A Foundation Built on Community and Connection

Sena is the founder and host of The Progressive Minds Show (TPMS), founder of The Exchange Ceremony, Progressive Minds Media. Through these initiatives, he has worked to create spaces for meaningful dialogue, cultural exchange, civic participation, and community empowerment.

Since 2017, he has interviewed, collaborated with, and honored prominent national, state, and local leaders, including former Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, former Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, the late Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr., Congressman Danny K. Davis, Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown, State Representatives Carol Ammons and Sonya Harper, Robert Blackwell Jr., Sean Tenner, Anthony Simpkins, and the Illinois Black Caucus Foundation, among others.

His work has explored public policy, immigration reform, civic engagement, human rights, community safety, and the relationships among African Americans, Africans, Afro-Caribbean communities, Afro-Latinos, and other people of African descent. Through these conversations, he has sought to amplify community voices, challenge misconceptions of the Diaspora, and highlight the contributions and potential of Chicago's South and West Sides. His commitment to community building has also inspired initiatives such as The Exchange Ceremony, the African Diaspora Summits, the All-Nations Soccer Tournament, and the Miss African Diaspora. These initiatives promote cultural pride, unity, peace, and resilience while addressing issues such as bullying, crime, and violence.

Strengthening Ghana–U.S. and Diaspora Relations

A central part of Sena's work has been connecting Ghanaian institutions, traditional leadership, public officials, and business communities with African Diaspora networks in the United States. Over the years, he has engaged with His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and members of his team during their visits and fundraising activities in Chicago in 2017 and 2024. These engagements strengthened his understanding of the opportunities for collaboration between Ghana, the United States, and the broader Diaspora.

One of his most significant cultural initiatives involved working with HRH Togbi Nyaho Tamakloe VI of the Anlo Kingdom to bring Ghanaian traditional royalty to Chicago and facilitate the honorary coronation of the late Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. as Honorary King of the African Diaspora I. This initiative was the first of its kind. It also represented a powerful expression of cultural recognition, historical connection, and solidarity between African traditional institutions and African American leadership. In 2023, Sena facilitated a visit to Ghana by members of the Illinois Black Caucus, contributing to a collaboration that resulted in the donation of medical equipment to Mamprobi Hospital through Ghana Health Services.  In 2024, he also helped facilitate the donation of a fire service truck by Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson, which was received in Ghana on behalf of the country by HRM Togbi Nyaho Tamakloe VI. These activities led to Togbi receiving a Legacy Award in Diaspora leadership and an introduction to the Mayor of Chicago in 2025.

These experiences reinforced his conviction that relationships between Africa and the Diaspora can extend beyond cultural exchange to deliver tangible benefits in healthcare, trade, investment, education, institutional partnerships, and community development.

Leadership, Project Management, and Public Engagement

In 2024, Sena served as an Assistant Project Manager II on the team responsible for building and managing the interior infrastructure of the US Democratic National Convention in Chicago. His responsibilities included quality assurance, coordinating and supervising union teamsters and decorators, identifying and mitigating project risks, managing materials and equipment, and supporting convention setup and dismantling operations.

He also collaborated with major media organizations such as CNN, ABC, NBC, FOX etc., production professionals, national delegates, diplomats, the secret service and local security personnel to support the successful execution of this major national event.During the 2024 U.S. election cycle, he supported community civic-engagement efforts in collaboration with Adolphus A. L. Kindle, Chief of Staff to the Cook County Board President. His broader community work has included partnerships with organizations and leaders focused on wellness, diversity, community development, and social empowerment.

Sena has also shared his perspectives on Ghana, Africa, and the African Diaspora at institutions including North Park University, Malcolm X College, the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, and Columbia College Chicago. His community engagement has connected him with organizations and leaders across Chicago's African and broader Diaspora communities, including the United African Organization, African International House, Martin's International, Ghana National Council, Bantufest and Organization of African Unity (OAU).

The Vision Behind Chicago Diaspora Chamber

The Chicago Diaspora Chamber builds on this foundation of relationships, experience, and shared purpose. It is envisioned as a platform for connecting businesses, entrepreneurs, investors, professionals, institutions, and community leaders across Chicago, the United States, Ghana, and the wider African Diaspora.

The Chamber seeks to foster business partnerships, encourage investment and trade, support entrepreneurship, facilitate cross-border collaboration, and create opportunities for knowledge exchange and economic advancement. By bringing together people and institutions with shared interests, the Chamber aims to transform longstanding cultural and community connections into sustainable economic relationships.

At its heart is the belief that the Diaspora represents an extraordinary source of talent, capital, knowledge, creativity, and influence. When these resources are connected strategically, they can create opportunities that benefit businesses, strengthen communities, and contribute to economic development on both sides of the Atlantic.

Our Guiding Philosophy

Growing up in a single-parent household in Accra, Ghana, shaped Sena's understanding of perseverance, opportunity, and the importance of supporting vulnerable communities. His experiences continue to inform his commitment to inclusive development, meaningful dialogue, and initiatives that place people at the center of progress. He believes that the strongest partnerships are built on trust, mutual respect, shared value, and a commitment to collective advancement.

The Chicago Diaspora Chamber exists to turn these principles into opportunities—bridging Africa and the Diaspora through business, culture, collaboration, and a shared vision for prosperity.

Together, we can strengthen connections, unlock new opportunities, and build a future in which the African Diaspora is not only connected by its heritage but also united through enterprise, investment, and sustainable development.
